James learned photography at the Photo Books Section of Powell's World of Books, in Portland, Oregon. In the intervening years, his work has been published in Life, Time, Outside, Stern, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The BBC, amongst others. His work has also shown at the United Nations, Le Centre Pompidou, and Columbia University.
