Tarahumara
The Tarahumara of the Copper Canyon region of Mexico are a semi-nomadic tribe of indigenous people who have gained the distinction of being the best ultra-marathon runners in the world, if not at least reluctantly so. Living in the remote canyons of Los Sierra Madres in the Chihuahua state, these runners learn from the earliest moments of life how to cross a brutal mountain terrain. On a simple diet of corn and water, these Raramuri ("runners") can travel for upwards of 125 miles during competition to best many of the world's top professional athletes. Here one of the Raramuri looks over the Copper Canyon at sunrise, where temperatures will go from near freezing to over 100 degrees throughout the course of a day.
